Find yourself in legends and tales about nature in Sigulda

It is no longer possible to fly in or enter the Ravine Raganu katls, but only have a look from distance. Perhaps, you will also have the courage to explore new trails all year long!

Zuši sulphur spring

Zuši sulphur spring is not surrounded by a legend, but it is a true story of real-life magic in it.

The surrounding mud has healing powers, which resulted in a medical institution with sulfur and sludge baths before World War II, but died during the war. In 1928 the Pogiņu sulfur and sludge bath institution was opened at "Zuši". In 1935 a separate dwelling for patients was built. As the press notes at the time, "Zuši" were the equivalent of Ķemeri.
Go into the nature, love it and feel it! Take your favorite bottle or can and go for the magical water. Springwater is believed to have healing powers, which in the vicinity of Sigulda is the only source of wholly microbiologically pure water. The sight of a Zuši sulphur spring can be combined with the route: One day around Sigulda and More Parish.

Peter's Cave

Peter's Cave is associated with several ancient stories and tales. A cave surounded by many legends, which can be reached by walking through a forest path, lets you discover three legends about the cave. One of them tells about the origin of the name of the cave - in the Swedish times, when the war broke out, the peasant Peter was hiding there from being captured and picked to be soldier.

Another story tells that in the same Swedish times an old "Grotto" housekeeper with his wife and son was hiding in the cave. When they were short on bread and his family were starving, Peter went to the nearby rectory to ask for bread. Hunger prevailed in the area, so he was denied. In desperation, Peter grabbed a hot loaf of bread that had just been pulled out of the oven and disappeared into the forest at lightning speed, escaping the persecutors.

The third narrative tells that a local pastor was hiding there and baptizing children in the cave. The route is available also here: Sigulda. The wild ravine of he river Vējupīte and mound Paradīze.

The Raven's ravine and cave

Very close to Peter's Cave is the tragically created the Raven's ravine and cave. The gorgeous ravine is formed in a dark red Devonian sandstone.

A legend that conects with past's cruel reallity is the story of the the Raven's ravine - “In the old days, Sigulda Mayor was once good and beloved by the people. He did not comand the workers as other mayors did,he did not talk down to them and even defended them before others. The other mayors couldn't stand him and his actions and secretly droped him down the cliff. Mayor had disappeared and people didn't know where he was. It took a while, but they saw a dozen  ravens fly over the ravine. They climbed down and found the mayor there. Since then, this ravine and the cave have got the name of the Raiven's ravine and cave".

So many different legends about less-known sights in Sigulda! It calls for starting to explore, read, analyze history guides, understanding which legends you can believe in… Tales, legends and stories make sightseeing even more enticing! We advise you to take your camera, a good mood and go into the trails!
