Kaļķugrava (Mežmuiža) springs

The spring is here, nature is starting to bloom and wake up and so are you, so go in the nature and feel its powerful forces.

Kaļķugrava (Mežmuiža) springs are the best place for it, to breed in the fresh air, be one with the nature.

Kaļķugrava (Mežmuiža) springs are an unusual geological object in Latvia in Allaži parish. The springs flow from the slope of Kaļķugrava and, depending on the amount of precipitation, the number of springs varies from 3 to 14 springs.

The springs are unique in that they form spring lime here. The bottom of the mill pond below the springs is colored in a peculiar greenish tone. The territory complies with the criteria for the establishment of a “Natura 2000”, therefore the Law “On Specially Protected Nature Territories” defines the prohibition as a protected territory of European significance - “Natura 2000”.

As the springs of Mežmuiža have a very steep fall, watermills have been installed there. In the past, water flowed from the pond dam through a wooden gutter or wooden crèche to the Kalļugrava mill cart. The brother of the father of the sculptor Teodors Zaļkalns worked in the mill, which was made of limestone.

The visit of Kaļķugrava (Mežmuiža) springs can be combined with the route:Sigulda-Allaži-Sigulda
