The Green Villa
The Green Villa

This building is the only remaining example of a typical resort house built in Sigulda at the beginning of the 20th century. “Green Villa” is a very important cultural monument, protected with national No.8498.

Šveices/Swiss Street was the first in Sigulda to be covered with these types of structures (it is next to Krišjāņa Valdemāra street). Before WWI, there were 114 villas and boarding houses in the city.

This wooden villa-type building with its porches and balconies was built towards the end of the 19th century.  It is one of the most beautiful resort houses and was built by Duke Kropotkin’s family.  In 1891, the building was a pharmacy rented to a certified apothecary known as Hugo Fogelis. After the agrarian reforms, the “Green Villa” became the property of Georg Kropotkin, the duchess Mary Kropotkin lived here until the 1939.

Looking at this villa, it is easy to imagine how the streets of Sigulda must have looked during that time.
