“Baložu māja” (The House of Balodis) is a craft workshop in Mālpils. It is run by restorer Sarmīte Balode and woodcarver Jānis Balodis. Every day, a unique piece of our cultural history is restored and new woodwork is created here. The most special feature of the workshop is the making of gingerbread wooden cupcake forms and the baking of gingerbread cookies.
The craftsmen will be happy to share their experience and tell you about woodcraft, the tools, materials and the process of making wooden items. There will be an opportunity to see the works in progress and the items to be restored. “Baložu māja” offers you the chance to participate and try your hand at crafting wooden utensils or roll your own longest wood wool!
We can welcome small groups and families of up to 10 participants at a mutually convenient time. Please call us a day in advance. Average length of a visit: one hour.
You can buy or order Jānis Balodis’ wooden bowls, wooden boards for everyday use or for a special occasion. You will also have the opportunity to buy gingerbread cakes “piparkūkas” baked in wooden forms.
